Those dates coincide with the Madis dates and can be viewed on Winchester’s site at:. The Cody Museum letter for a model 1890 says it was originally a WRF built in 1902. For purposes of determining if your gun is legally considered an antique (pre-1899 DOM), the BATF has told us they use the DOM dates published by the manufacture (Winchester). My best guess is that I have a model 1906 that was rebarreled, but it could be a restocked, rebarreled model 1890, or maybe it was made up (but probably not by the factory) from parts. The serial number should be below 15,552. The barrel is a Winchester factory (not aftermarket) barrel that was made sometime around 1930. Based on proof marks on the barrel and receiver (thanks to Trapp55 for lots of work deciphering the proof marks to identify the barrel), the rifle was rebarreled, probably not by the factory, around 1930. It has1906 wood and a 22LR octagonal barrel. The question is whether there two with the same serial number. My understanding is that Winchester used the same receiver for both the 18. Thank you for taking the time to evaluate this rifle for me, it was left to me by my Dad.Does anybody know if Winchester made duplicate model 1890 / 1906 receivers with the same serial numbers?Īccording to the Winchester Collectors list (thanks to Tuckerd1 for putting lots of good reference material on TFF last year), a Winchester model 1890 serial # 139379 was built in1902 and a model 1906 with the same serial number was built in 1909. I also wasn't sure if it was a second model take-down (due to serial number - 228697) or is it a more common third model take-down? Not sure if this means the barrel has been replaced? I have attached pictures as well. Experts Assistant: The Firearms Appraiser can help. The rifle cycles fine and the bore is in good shape with rifling visible and sharp. It has some minor pitting on the right side. The receiver has no visible serial number. The rear tang has Model 1890, Winchester, Trademark stamped into it. The value of your rifle is difficult to ball park without seeing pictures of it. Model 1897 serial numbers begin at serial number 31609, approximately where the 1893 model serials ended. Model 18 serial numbers overlap in 1897-1899. The fore grip is 5" long with 12 grooves. Model 1890 serial number 286727 was manufactured on September 14th, 1906, and as such, it most likely is an early Third Model. From 1897 to 1899, Models 1897 were serially numbered with the Model 1893. The wood is in good shape, with a few minor dings and scratches, nothing major. It has the octagonal barrel and has 22 Long stamped where the barrel meets the receiver. From this info it was manufactured in 1905. Can you please estimate the value of this rifle? I looked up the serial number 228697 in the Winchester pocket guide. Also special is the extremely late serial number, issued long after the 1927 merger of the Model 1890 and Model 1906 serial ranges, perhaps placing its manufacture as last as post-WW2.
